This Sunday our Youth Pastor will be speaking. It’s “Youth Sunday” … “Graduation Sunday.” Students and their families are consumed in all manner of graduation exercises from ceremonies to parties. Among our college students is a question that goes something like, “Are you going to walk?” – which, for the uninitiated means are you going to participate in the commencement ceremony? It’s a good question. To “commence” means “to begin,” and it’s time for students to begin; to begin a new chapter in their lives. For some it’s the moment of separating from father and mother in a more permanent way, for others it’s learning to stand on their own two feet and walk. I think it’s a question God might be asking of all of us. “Are you going to walk?”

I John 2:6 Whoever claims to live in him must walk as Jesus did. (NIV)

Like any parent … our Heavenly Father gets excited when we stand up and take those feeble first steps. He’s ever at the ready to reach out His hands and keep us from falling. (He’s able to do that you know.) Perhaps it’s time this summer that we take some new steps. Perhaps it’s time that we ask “where the good way is and walk in it.” (Jeremiah 6:16)

Isaiah 40:30-31 Even youths grow tired and weary, and young men stumble and fall; but those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint. (NIV)

I’m going to walk … are you?
I’ll see you Sunday

Welcome to HOLY Week or “Greater Week” as it is known in some circles.

Palm Sunday leads to Holy Monday Tuesday and Wednesday, Maundy Thursday, Good Friday, Lazarus Saturday, and RESURRECTION SUNDAY!

“Maundy” is a corruption of the word mandatum signifying Christ’s mandate to the disciples of a “new commandment to love one another.” Good Friday is essentially a corruption of “God’s Friday” … for it’s hard to refer to a crucifixion as “good.” “Holy Saturday” or “Lazarus Saturday” refers to the raising of Lazarus from the dead in Bethany just outside of Jerusalem and just before Palm Sunday. And Easter Sunday is really RESURRECTION SUNDAY!

I’m praying for you (and with you) for all those whom you have invited to come and sit with you on Easter Sunday morning. So many of you have shared with me the names of those whom you have invited.

Don’t forget – Good Friday service begins with a reception at 6:00 PM and a service at 7:00 PM.

Easter’s activities begin at 9:30 with a wonderful breakfast spread, Easter Egg hunt for the kids, activities for the youth, and the service begins at 10:30 AM. Don’t forget the time change to 10:30! Come early for a good seat!

Easter Sunday night: Zack Swain of “Blazing Pianos” and “Praise INC” will be with us for a wonderful evening of music and praise to bring the day to a fitting conclusion!

I’ll see you here!

Dust and Ash … no matter what … dealing with dust and ash is messy, dirty, and unattractive. Dust and Ash remind me of a “four letter word”- “work” … cleaning the house, dusting the furniture or cleaning out a fireplace and having to deal with the ashes. Dust and Ash … they don’t really speak of life … they speak of being spent or used up, and the clean-up necessary to make a place for something new. Welcome to Lent, a season devoted to the clean-up of dust and ash of our lives. So nice that Lent comes along in the Spring, a sort of “Spring cleaning” opportunity for us. Perhaps Lent is best thought of as a season of cleaning up and cleaning out our lives to make room for the work of the Spirit of God. I trust that you’ll join us on the journey.

Ash Wednesday service: 7:00 PM

Lenten Dinners & Table-talks Sunday nights: 5:30 PM

Mark’s Musings is an occasional electronic publication designed to encourage or challenge us along in our Spiritual journey.

If you’ve received it (as a blind carbon copy from Aaron and Linnea Hanson) you’re probably already subscribed … if you’d like to subscribe just send an email. If you’d like to break my heart and “unsubscribe” please send an email. The thoughts contained therein are the sole work and responsibility of Mark Bernhardt, pastor of Karcher Church of the Nazarene. Feel free to send it along to someone else. God bless.
